The Dyson PH04 Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde purifier is a purifier, humidifier, and fan all in one. It uses AutoReact technology to automatically sense and capture pollutants for cleaner and fresher air, and it is also capable of detecting and destroying formaldehyde (which is released from wooden floors and fabric). In addition, the device also has the effect of adding humidity to the room with the humidification function.

Design and features

The Dyson PH04 Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde purifier weighs 5.09 kg and has wheels for easy transport from room to room. The Dyson is capable of 90-degree oscillation and has 10 speed settings. With a height of just over 92cm and a diameter of 31cm, it takes up a little space, but much less than the bulky square humidifiers commonly found on the market. I like its rounded shape, which allows it to fit in a corner. The Dyson PH04 features a fully sealed HEPA H13 standard filter and Air Multiplier technology that circulates purified, humidified air throughout the entire room. It is capable of:

  • Creates a powerful stream of pure air that can reach every corner of the room.
  • Continuously monitor air quality and adjust fan speed accordingly.
  • Filters 99.95% of allergens and pollutants, including PM 2.5, pollen and mold spores. Detects and destroys formaldehyde.
  • Thoroughly removes mineral buildup in the entire water system with just the touch of a button.
  • Remotely controlled via phone, even when you are not at home.

You can choose from three different modes:

  1. Fan Mode: for direct cooling with selection ranging from 0 to 90 degrees.
  2. Cool Wind Mode: to simulate a cool breeze.
  3. Reverse Airflow Mode: to filter and humidify without cooling.

You can choose from three settings: Fan mode for direct cooling with a selection ranging from 0 to 90 degrees, Breeze mode to simulate a refreshing breeze, and reverse airflow mode for filtration and humidification without cooling. You can control the machine with simple voice instructions or with the remote control, which can be stored neatly on top of the machine when not in use. The PH04 can be programmed to turn off after a preset period of time ranging from 30 minutes to 8 hours, and it works with Amazon Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.

The Dyson PH04 Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde purifier can be programmed to turn off after a set period of 30 minutes to 8 hours, and it works with Amazon Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. And it offers two color options to choose from: nickel and gold or white and gold. We tested the nickel and gold options.

Settings and performance

The Dyson air purifier and humidifier is well packaged and easy to install. After removing the tape from the machine, I simply filled the water tank, inserted the water tank into the bottom of the machine, plugged it into a wall outlet, and turned it on. I had the device up and running within 5 minutes of unboxing. The manual states that tap water is safe to use; However, because my house uses hard water (water containing high levels of calcium and magnesium), I used distilled water to ensure the longevity of the product.

Dyson PH04 connects directly to the Dyson app. Once I downloaded the app, the connection process took just a few seconds as it automatically scanned the house for Dyson devices. This app serves as a remote control and second air quality monitor, a touch remote is easy to use to set the desired humidity level and fan speed. So you can Control your device from other rooms in the house or even when you're out of the house.

Dyson PH04 works effectively when in fan mode. You can select your desired fan speed and the device will respond quickly and quietly. The fan oscillates between 45 or 90 degrees, which I find is enough to cool the living room. The machine also has a reverse mode so you can direct the airflow to the back of the machine if you don't want it blowing straight at you.

Although I initially intended to use the humidification feature of this device, I found myself using the air filtration feature multiple times. The Dyson app continuously measures air quality. I noticed significant changes when drying my hair in the adjacent bathroom. After doing some research, I discovered that electric hair dryers are a common source of ultrafine particles, commonly known as PM2.5. The PM2.5 meter will spike on device and app screens.

As long as the device is set to Auto-Purge mode, when the amount of measured pollutants spikes, the device will switch to high speed until the air quality returns to normal. I also noticed this happening whenever I cooked dinner in the kitchen, near the living room, where the device was plugged in. To me, this makes more sense because oils and fats can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. . Again, the unit will start up and run at a higher fan speed until the air returns to “Good” quality.

The humidification function works as expected. I placed this unit in the same room as the wood stove because the wood stove causes extremely dry air and has even caused cracks in our roofing due to the dry air. I use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in the living room. Although the PH04 also continuously measures humidity when turned on, I wanted a second source to test the device's accuracy.

My hygrometer measured humidity at 31 percent after my wood stove had been pumping for about 3 hours. The temperature in the living room was a quiet 79 degrees F. I set the device to Auto-humidify mode with a preset humidity level of 50 percent. Within an hour, the Dyson increased the overall humidity in the room to 43 percent, and within 2 hours, it had reached the humidity level I set at 50 percent. When the device reaches the desired level, the fan will automatically adjust to a lower fan speed to maintain the appropriate level.

Overall, I found Dyson's three features to work very well. I especially enjoyed being able to monitor my humidity levels and air quality through the Dyson app, and I found myself checking it multiple times a day.

Conclusions

Dyson PH04 is like a chimera. It tries to offer some distinct functionality and excels at some, but disappoints at others, and overall it's trying to make an impression by doing too much at once.

PH04 has three main functions: filtering VOCs, filtering particles and humidifying the environment. Although these three functions are related, its two dominant functions—VOC cleaning and humidification—have the least overlap. The H13 HEPA filter providing humidification seems like a big help, but particle filtration is also one of its weaker performers.

We would recommend the PH04 to consumers who have specific needs for an air purifier that is notorious for VOCs and who also happen to be able to use its humidification feature.
